DIY Shelves

I am all over the place with my projects and my "I neeeeeeeeeed this" jumped around. I decided I needed floating shelves for the freshly painted upstairs hallway and the priority of those outweighed all the big things (at the time). Luckily we overbought in the wood department and so supplies were at hand. This is right around the time I found out that Loren was pretttttttttty good at building things just by showing him a little picture!

First things first, getting rid of the white walls throughout the hallway. (I can't believe we managed to live in 2 apartments without painting the walls!? Our last duplex we caved and walls were definitely painted).

I was complaining about how dim the upstairs was forever when we realized that it may possibly just need a brighter bulb (and a good cleaning!) DUH!

I just love this little light :)

It is the simplest things that can change a whole area! (And all those touch ups on the wall? I insisted it was not needed, the wall looked fine! But after the paint was up it was obvious that it needed to be done :/ )

SO much better! One more coat of paint? Check.

A much more patient person would probably put drop cloths down to cover the new floors but not me!

After this? Alllllllllll the white trim was doused with fresh paint and the dreaded quarter rounds were nailed back in. Quarter rounds will be the death of me. Three months later and only about 1/3 of the house has them back on. They may be the worst, especially if you are trying to keep the originals. What happens in the three months? You forget there is a matching number somewhere (penciled to the wall or trim, written on a piece of paper or stuck with a piece of tape) all of which gets painted over or tossed! The. Worst.

Shelf supplies: A few 2x4s (leftover from the board and batten), nail gun, Kona stain/poly and an old rag.

What I learned: take the time to wipe paint off the floor, it is NOT easier to chip up after it's dry and plaster walls will always be uneven no matter what, it's part of the charm!
